Improved Seed Production for Sustainable Agriculture
What is the Project About?
One of the factors constraining DPRK’s efforts to achieve food security is poor quality seeds. The seed multiplication sub sector is faced with weak research and extension culture, low level of awareness and poor technology applications. Due to the lack of appropriate cleaning and processing facilities, seed farmers fail to meet acceptable standards of rate of germination, moisture and impurities.
Food security is dependent on seed security. To improve the availability of good quality seed of good varieties, the project “Improved Seed Production for Sustainable Agriculture” seeks improved cultivars and quality seed production of food crops and vegetables.
Through the Seed Project, as of September 2013, training has been imparted for the improved planning and implementation of a coordinated seed improvement programme, including seed production, processing and testing. Facilities for seed production, conditioning and seed certification have been upgraded. Farmers' awareness and knowledge for use of certified quality of seeds of recommended varieties have improved. The availability of quality seeds suited to the agro and ecological conditions of DPRK has increased.
